HSBC Plans Deep Adviser Cuts. Finance Modeling Keeps Showing Up.
HSBC is reportedly planning to cut around 70% of its UK financial adviser roles as it expands its use of AI and restructures its wealth business. The Financial Times reported the plan on October 7, 2026, and HRreview covered it the same day. According to those reports, the proposals would also affect around half of management and specialist roles in the division, employees have entered consultation, and affected staff are expected to leave at the end of October.
What is and is not confirmed#
HSBC has not said how many employees could lose their jobs. It has also not publicly set out figures linking automation to the proposed redundancies, so how much of this is directly caused by AI is not known. The stated direction, per the FT as reported by HRreview, is a more digitally focused service with less reliance on traditional financial advisers.
That is one bank, one division, and one reported plan that is still in consultation. It is not evidence that advice roles are disappearing across finance, and it does not tell you what other banks will do.
What today's Job Index shows#
In today's Job Index, Finance Modeling is named in 17 of the 189 postings we track (39 new roles in this window). It shows up under titles like VP Pricing & Packaging and Global Workforce Planning & Transformation, not only under finance job titles. Those are skill mentions in our crawl sample, not a share of the whole labor market, and they do not establish pay or hiring outcomes.
Our read#
A restructure can delete a role title overnight. It has a much harder time deleting a skill you can show. A financial model that someone can open, stress-test, and use to make a decision is portable: it travels with you from one org chart to the next, and it reads the same to a bank, a startup, or a fractional client.
The HSBC story is about a specific operating model changing. The useful question for everyone else is narrower: if your role title disappeared, what proof would you still be able to hand someone?
Turn a model into proof this week#
- Pick one model you have already built. A pricing model, a forecast, a workforce plan, a unit-economics sheet.
- Write the question it answered. One sentence, in the words the decision-maker used.
- Show the decision it changed. What did someone do differently because of it? Use real numbers where you can share them, and ranges where you cannot.
- Strip anything confidential and keep the structure, assumptions, and logic visible.
That one page is worth more in a conversation than a title line on a resume.

Methodology#
Job Index figures are based on a daily crawl of public job listings, snapshotted 2026-10-08. Figures reflect what is posted in the crawl window, not modeled projections. HSBC details are attributed to the Financial Times as reported by HRreview on October 7, 2026.
