Pay Ranges Hit a 12-Week High in the Job Index

Over the last two weeks, 58 of 182 new postings the Rocket Job Index picked up on We Work Remotely published a pay range. That is 31.9%, the highest two-week share since we started tracking the board in mid-July. Across the prior ten weeks the share was 19.0% (152 of 800).

Two-week windowPostings with a pay rangeShare
Jul 15 to Jul 2649 of 30016%
Jul 27 to Aug 938 of 15425%
Aug 10 to Aug 2328 of 12822%
Aug 24 to Sep 69 of 6813%
Sep 7 to Sep 2028 of 15019%
Sep 21 to Oct 558 of 18232%

Every earlier window sat between 13% and 25%, and the jump from the ten-week baseline is large enough that it is unlikely to be day-to-day noise. The ranges are not clustered at one employer either: the 58 postings come from 35 different companies.

What this does and does not measure#

We counted new postings first seen on one board, deduplicated, and flagged a posting when its text included a numeric minimum and maximum, such as "160,000 to 200,000 USD". We used one board on purpose, because it is the source we have tracked consistently since July, so a change in which boards we crawl cannot explain the jump. That also sets the limit. It is a remote-heavy, tech-heavy, US-weighted board. This is not a market-wide pay measure, and it does not tell you whether pay itself went up.

Two public numbers from the same week#

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 2 that average hourly earnings rose 3.0% over the past twelve months, while September payrolls grew by just 29,000 and July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000.

On October 1, Connecticut began requiring a wage range and a general description of benefits in every internal and public job posting, with no employer-size threshold. It also covers some roles outside the state that report to a Connecticut supervisor or worksite.

Our window started on September 21, before that rule took effect, so treat it as context and not as the cause. What the three numbers do say together: pay is getting easier to see, and wage growth is not running hot. In that setting, the posted range is the anchor for the whole conversation.

When the number is in the ad, the negotiation moves#

A posted range does not end the pay conversation. It changes the question. "What does it pay?" is answered before the first call. The question that is left is "Where in the range do you land, and why?"

Titles do not answer that well. Evidence does. Three checks before you apply:

  1. Read the range as a level signal. The spread between the bottom and the top tells you how much scope the team is willing to pay for. Find out what the top of the range is buying.
  2. Pick the half you can prove. Write down two pieces of work that justify the top half of the range: a system you owned, a number you moved, a team you unblocked.
  3. Lead with the proof, not the title. If the number is fixed in public, your case for where you sit in it is the only part still open.

For hiring teams, the same logic runs the other way. A published range filters the pipeline before it fills, so the job description has to say what separates the bottom of the range from the top. If it does not, every candidate will assume the top.

Machine Learning is today's public lead skill, appearing in 16 of the 189 active postings in the Job Index.
