Legal & General's Voluntary Cuts Are a First Step, Not a Clean Exit

A voluntary redundancy round can sound like the safe exit. At Legal & General, it is the first step in a restructuring that still leaves compulsory cuts on the table.

HRreview reported on 25 September 2026 that L&G plans to cut around 1,000 jobs by mid-2027. That is roughly a tenth of its approximately 10,000 employees, most of whom are UK-based. The process will initially seek voluntary redundancies. Compulsory cuts could follow depending on how many people apply. The asset management division, which manages about £1.2 trillion, is excluded because it has its own restructuring plans.

This is one company's confirmed plan, not a market-wide trend. The report does not say how many of the cuts will ultimately be compulsory. It also does not establish employer motives, pay, or selection methods.

The practical detail is in the legal mechanics. Ross Spiller, a solicitor quoted in the same report, points out that starting with voluntary departures does not remove an employer's redundancy obligations. If voluntary numbers fall short and the company moves to compulsory cuts, selection pools and criteria come under much greater scrutiny. Subjective measures such as "organisational fit" are hard to defend. Criteria that look neutral can still create risk.

If you are inside a UK insurance or pensions restructuring, the useful question is not the headline count. It is how the voluntary-to-compulsory path would work if volunteers do not hit the number. Ask what criteria would govern any compulsory stage and how consultation will run while proposals can still be influenced. The report does not say whether the voluntary phase has started or when criteria will be set. That uncertainty is the point: the rules matter before decisions are final.
