The Freeze Headlines Are Telling You the Wrong Story

If you are planning a job search or an AI hire off the layoff headlines, you are working from a stale map.

Yesterday HR Dive published a report that cuts against the narrative: technology employment is still growing even as tech-sector layoffs continue. The more interesting detail is where the growth sits. As companies across industries prioritize AI, the openings are coming from an increasing variety of organizations, not just the firms that make the layoff news.

My read: both things are true at once. The tech sector is cutting. The hiring is happening somewhere else. HR Dive points to manufacturing, administrative support services, and retail as sectors where technology jobs are showing up outside traditional tech companies. The employer posting the role you want may not look like a tech company, and may not be covered like one.

Today's Rocket Job Index offers a smaller cross-check on that skills-first view: Figma appears in 21 tracked roles. A concrete skill can travel across industries even when the companies, teams, and job titles around it change.

That changes decisions on both sides of the table.

If you are a candidate with technical skills, searching only inside the tech sector means competing where the headlines are and missing where the openings are. The report suggests your market is wider than the freeze story implies.

If you are an operator hiring for AI work, the implication runs the other way: your competition for that hire now includes companies that do not sell software. Some candidates may also be sitting out entirely because they assume a broad freeze, so a clear, specific job post matters more when the news is doing your signaling badly.

What this does not establish: one report is not a market-wide law. It says nothing about pay, selectivity, or whether the growth holds through the quarter. Treat it as a correction to the map, not a promise about the territory.

The loudest signal is not the largest one. Plan accordingly.
