Cybersecurity is loudest today. Data Engineering is the public lead

The useful fact in today's Job Index is not that "Data Engineering leads 13 new roles." It does not. Cybersecurity is the loudest skill in the window (18 roles). Data Engineering is the public lead (4) because the security category already had the headline this week.

That gap is the story. Volume and the public lead are not the same number. Treating them as the same number is how a daily board turns into a pile of random stats.

What the crawl actually bought#

13 new roles on 2026-08-24. 26 publishable skills made the cut. Counts are from this crawl window, not a share of the whole market.

Why the public lead is not the loudest skill#

We rotate the headline so one Job Index category does not own the email and the blog for a week. Security was already used. So Data Engineering is today's public lead even though Cybersecurity is louder.

If you are hiring, that is a reminder: the title on the req is lagging the skill on the req. If you are selling work, pick the skill you can show, not the headline we happened to rotate onto.

What to do with it this week#

1. Pick one skill from the table you already have an artifact for.
2. Put the artifact where a buyer can judge it in a minute. A repo, a teardown, a before/after, not a bullet list.
3. Price the outcome (a pipeline that holds, a control that actually closes, a JS surface that ships) instead of the hours.
